Compliance Director – Back Office For Organizing in Michigan (“BOOM”)

BOOM LLC is an organization that provides the backend finance, administrative and HR service functions for our network of nonprofit organizations and sponsored projects. Founded by leaders from 482Forward, the Michigan Education Justice Coalition and the Urban Core Collective, BOOM serves as a backoffice hub to meet the growing needs of base building organizations, allowing them to focus on programmatic and organizing priorities.

Position Overview: 

In partnership with the Managing Director, the Compliance Director will provide support to BOOM staff and partners to ensure organizational and electoral compliance. This position requires a hard-working, innovative, organized, flexible, meticulous, empathetic compliance professional to support a network of Michigan-based non-profit organizations and entities to leverage, scale and innovate their work for transformative social change.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership in ensuring BOOM and its partners remain in compliance:
  • Maintain compliance calendar;
  • Manage c3/c4/PAC compliance for all partners;
  • Submit all lobby and election related reports and filings;
  • Support development and submission of organizational filings;
  • Manage PEO compliance for BOOM, including licensure;
  • Develop and lead compliance trainings for all partners and new staff;
  • Provide oversight and support to partners to ensure they are maximizing their capacity and use of organizing tactics, while staying compliant;
  • Assist HR Director in the administration of health insurance and 401k plans;
  • Communicate policies and establish systems to support partner staff;
  • Assist Finance team in ensuring partners are properly following protocols;
  • Support Managing Director in onboarding new partner organizations;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications:

The candidate should demonstrate a passion for breaking new ground to lead social change.  The successful candidate will most likely have held senior-level management positions within non-profit organizations. Experience working within a “values-driven” organization is strongly preferred. Additional requirements are:

  • As a prerequisite, the successful candidate must believe in the core values of social, economic and racial justice and be driven by the mission of BOOM and its partners; cultural competence and experience working within diverse communities and staff required.
  • At least 5  years of combined compliance, operations, or management experience required. Experience providing compliance support to non profit organizations is a plus. Experience working in or with a Professional Employers Organization (PEO) is a plus.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of certifications and experience required.
  • Expert knowledge of different fiscal and legal entities (including 501c3, 501c4, PAC, LLC).
  • Ability to understand, develop and communicate financial, HR and compliance policies, controls and procedures.
  • Excellent time and project management skills; a nimble self-starter with a proven ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks at one time.
  • Values-driven individual with a good sense of humor.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. A systems-thinker. Not afraid to take initiative. Transforms problems into opportunities.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, confidentiality, and empathy.
  • Working knowledge of  Quickbooks Online, Quickbooks Workforce/t-sheets,  Bill.com (and Divvy), GoCo, Airtable, Freshdesk, Docusign, Google workspace preferred; General comfort with tech platforms.

Employment Terms: This is a full-time exempt position. Must be a Michigan resident; preference given to candidates located in Detroit, Lansing or Grand Rapids areas. Remote position, with very limited travel. Reliable internet access is required. Salary range for this position is $90,000-100,000/year. Excellent benefits package, including health, dental, vision, and prescription insurance. Access to 401k program and unlimited PTO.
