A little about us…

We are a statewide grassroots movement organization that fights for political, social, racial, economic and environmental justice. We work at the grassroots to give people a sense of their own power. We collaborate with organizations and coalitions in communities throughout New York to address critical issues at the local, state and federal levels.

 

We’re looking to add a Regional Director to our team.  The Regional Director role is to build a bold vision for the New York City chapter that includes the creation of strategic local organizing campaigns that connect the dots to our statewide Justice Agenda.   The Regional Director will ensure that Citizen Action achieves its organizing and political goals in the field by supervising, training and developing the skills of organizing staff, and developing and implementing fundraising plans for the New York City Region. Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse staff, local leaders and members are critical qualities for success in this position.

Our Process:

The hiring process at our organization has multiple layers and steps to ensure we are hiring the folks that best fit our culture and organizational needs. Who you are and what you’ve accomplished:

A deep commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice demonstrated through values and action.
A demonstrated track record of building and winning local and/or statewide issues and electoral campaigns. Candidates should possess a record of success in the creation of strategic campaigns that employ activities like list building, phone banking and canvassing, committee creation and support, direct action event planning, coalition building, and membership recruitment. This role will hold a commitment to developing organizers and volunteers to create, timeline out, and follow through on strategy to win local issue campaigns with field plans that connect to the organization’s statewide issue campaigns.
Political acumen that strategically moves elected officials in support of our issue campaigns.
Experience in fundraising.
More than three years of experience in supervising, coaching, and leading a team.
Extensive knowledge of and experience working with voter files, modeling and targeting, and the Voter Action Network (VAN).
Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships and to work in a team, including fostering a strong team culture.
Ability to manage and assess multiple high-priority programs and priorities in the New York City Region alongside a strong statewide power analysis.
Ability to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
Ability to communicate needs and feedback in real time up, down, and across the organization in a professional manner.
Ability to work with leaders, staff, partners and operate with a high level of judgment and discretion.
Willingness to work as part of a solution-oriented team, recognizing that compromise may be necessary in order to move the work forward.
Knowledge of the policy and political landscape regarding the New York City Housing Authority a plus.
Ability to speak Spanish or another language is a plus.

 

What you’ll do and the impact you’ll make:

Work with staff and leaders to develop and execute electoral and issue-based campaign plans.
Recruit, train, support and supervise and hold accountable a team of organizers who are building engaged regional leadership teams and chapter membership.
Model and engage in training staff and leaders through coaching, demonstrating skills, doing work shoulder to shoulder, and using analysis to give effective feedback.
Serve as Citizen Action of New York’s representative in the New York City Region for the Working Families Party, aligning votes to organizational values and strategy. This may include developing organizers and member leaders in local, statewide, and at times federal political landscapes.
Anchor and manage New York City Council relationships in coordination with political leads at Citizen Action of New York while supporting organizers to build people power to hold electeds accountable to our issues once in office.
Oversee and support the political endorsements for the New York City chapter.
Anchor a portion of the New York City team’s field and base building work in two East Harlem New York City Housing developments to meet shared goals. This includes canvassing, phonebanking, and an occasional meeting with residents.
Promote and build support for Citizen Action’s initiatives through oral and written communication with its members, organizers, influencers, and the public.
Create a development plan that includes funder prospecting for NYC and ensure robust regional fundraising plans. This will include supporting organizers to create and implement regional fundraising actions.
Supervise, lead, assign, and evaluate staff including ensuring individual work plans meet the goals of the organization and overseeing the implementation and evaluation of those work plans.
Work cooperatively with external partners, other organizations, elected officials, unions, and their political/field representatives to build relationships.
Recruit, interview, and recommend hiring staff.
Demonstrate an investment in the success of organizers and culture across the Organizing department through collaboration with the Co-Organizing Directors. This includes a commitment to a joyful and accountable community across the department and alongside our member leaders.
A commitment to Citizen Action’s mission and vision as we meet people where they are while also centering our core strategies to win big on issues and build electoral power.
Monitor member leadership development goals and work with staff to meet them.
Make strategic assessments about chapter building initiatives.
Weekly and other periodic work reporting. Maintaining an awareness and documentation of work happening in the New York City region.
Ability and willingness to fully adopt use of Google Drive, EveryAction, Asana, VAN, Slack, Action Network, ThruTalk, Spoke/Relay, and any other tools used by the organizations.

Any other duties as required by your supervisor

 

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position will supervise lead organizers, who supervise community organizers.

 

All supervisors are responsible for the success of those staff who they supervise.

Salary: The salary for this position is $70,000- $80,400, Depending on experience. Relocation stipend available.

 

This position is located in NYC, staff must live in one of the boroughs. This person will be reporting to that chapters’ office location. In-person participation in meetings and events may be required at different locations.Periodic travel across New York State is required. Travel may be required outside of New York State. Travel may include multiple day trips and over weekends.
