GRANTS MANAGER

Detroit Action is a grassroots member-led, community-based organization fighting for political power, racial and economic justice for working-class Black and Brown Detroiters. Our mission is to build the power of individuals and families to challenge the root cause of poverty, advance justice, and promote human development through neighborhood-driven community organizing and civic engagement.

POSITION SUMMARY: The Grants Manager will be responsible for writing grant proposals and reports, along with organizing and maintaining Detroit Action’s grants management systems in alignment with the organization’s fundraising strategy and goals. The Grants Manager will report directly to the Development Director.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Prospecting and writing grant proposals for Detroit Action (c4) and Detroit Action Ed Fund (c3)

Tracking of upcoming and past grant reports and proposals, including documentation and timelines

Support on building DA system for tracking (outside of Tides, our fiscal sponsor)

Join meetings to talk content for proposals and reports – first drafting based on ideas

Support in building and then own the system to make sure we’re on track for grant timelines

Organize and store all documents in a way that makes sense

Manage relationships with accounts and other stakeholders needed for financial record keeping.

Looking around corners on grant renewals and flagging relationships so we can get ahead

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist Development Director with large fundraising events – tracking donors, particularly philanthropic partners

Learn about the organization’s mission, vision, values, and programs in order to create strong proposals and reports for funder

Education and Experience:

2+ years in a fundraising/development with 2 years of grant writing experience (organizing/civic engagement, Black/Brown-centered, social justice experience a plus)

Experience managing multiple grant proposals and reports at one time

Experience in organizing grant application tracking and reporting systems

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Excellent written and verbal communication skills and an ability to adapt communication to different audiences.

Outstanding organizational skills.

Proactive orientation to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, embodying solidarity across many identities (race, class, gender, LGBTQIA+, ability, etc.)

Extremely versatile, adaptable, nimble

Creative problem solver

Attention to detail and ability to thoughtfully prioritize

Solid project management skills

Willingness to step outside your comfort zone and challenge your thinking and others’

History of successful execution of proposals and awarding of grants

A quick learner who is able to make the connection of how Detroit Action can use fundraising/grantmaking as a tool for organizing.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

The Grants Manager reports to the Development Director. The Grants Manager also regularly works with the various departments and organizational partners to maintain efficiency and transparency for the Development activities at Detroit Action. Detroit Action and Detroit Action Education are projects of Tides Advocacy and Tides Center.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to lift boxes of development materials.

Able to attend networking events throughout the United States.

Must be able to travel domestically on an airplane 4-8 times a year.

Must be able to sit in front of a computer for extended periods of time.

Must be able to move around an office.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The position is a full-time position that works 35 hours per week. This position is hybrid, and the on-site location is an office building in Detroit, MI. The position will be required to work some weekends (Saturday and Sunday).  The position may require national travel up to 20% of the time. The assigned workspace is an open and shared work area with a moderate level of noise and interruptions.
