The Lead Organizer for the Homes Guarantee campaign at People’s Action/Institute will support and build the capacity of a cohort of grassroots organizations through an ambitious, multi-year effort to organize a base of poor and working class tenants.
OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION
The Homes Guarantee campaign is seeking a Lead Organizer to introduce a new level of rigor and depth to our basebuilding and leadership development. A public health and economic disaster have exposed more than ever the failures of a system that commodifies our most basic needs. In this context, the need to transform our relationship to land and housing is not new, but newly urgent. The Lead Organizer will develop the art and science of tenant organizing to take our movement to a degree of scale and power needed so we can contend for a Homes Guarantee.
The Homes Guarantee Lead Organizer will build this program in deep coordination with a team of talented campaigners, strategists, trainers, and communicators. The cohort that the Lead Organizer supports will include 10-12 organizations, each resourced to hire one or two organizers to lead the grassroots basebuilding efforts in their states/localities.
This is the dream job of someone who wants to be on the front line of bringing masses of people impacted by racial capitalism into the collective struggle for a better world. This is a chance to be part of one of the biggest, boldest campaigns at a historic moment in the tenant movement.
The Homes Guarantee Lead Organizer should be highly experienced in basebuilding, preferably among tenants, and developing power organizations. This position reports to the Homes Guarantee Campaign Director and works in partnership with the Powerbuilding Team.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ORIENTATION
Drive, drive, drive. Own the project of building and developing a cohort of organizations with a renewed, deepened commitment to basebuilding. Then drive the work forward to identify new leaders, develop and train tenant organizers, design local fights that are connected to federal campaigns, take action, and build power in the biggest ways possible. Create an accountable and powerful collective. Build relationships based on accountability and foster a culture of rigor around basebuilding. Do this in a way that is relational, not transactional. It’s not all about numbers, but it is all about building power. This is about building a culture of basebuilding that electrifies and focuses people, and takes our movement to a new place. Invest in organizers and network leadership. Demonstrate how a team approach – with a sharp vision and clear responsibilities – is the right way to realize our ambitious goals. Use agitation and compassion to bring out the best in people. Build a following among the organizers and leaders in the Homes Guarantee cohort. Be a coach and trainer. Be a coach to the organizers hired into the Homes Guarantee cohort and building local bases. Assist with setting strategy and goals, be ready to review meeting agendas and plans, give honest feedback. Train organizers on how to develop their leaders into powerful roles. Make No Small Plans. But do make clear, thoughtful ones. Own the project of managing an excellent workplan for yourself and your team. Your plans should project your work for at least a year, and should include measures that will help us track your success. Tell the story of the work. Own the tracking and metrics related to this program, regularly update the rest of the People’s Action network and Homes Guarantee team about the progress and challenges, and build a plan for storytelling to the allies and general public. Manage up effectively. Accurately determine what issues the Homes Guarantee Campaign Director, Powerbuilding Team, and members of the team need to (help) address and make key operational decisions in their absence.Integrate new ideas. Take the hand off of ideas, deals, relationships, and new areas of work from the Campaign Director and team and move them through the implementation stage.Build deep trust. Invest in relationships with organizers and leaders in order to deeply understand their self-interest. This will very likely involve traveling to spend time with local organizations, if/when it becomes safe to do so. Be inclusive. Recognize and appreciate different ways of working and being.Look to the long-term. Push every member of your team, and every organization in the cohort, to address not just the short-term gains but how they are building power towards the North Star: a Homes Guarantee. Model our values and culture. Model joyous rebellion, optimism, accountability, and seriousness about getting sh*t done, inside and outside the organization. Build this into your team.
