JOB OPENING: ORGANIZING DIRECTOR

Hoosier Action and its affiliate, Hoosier Action Resource Center, are seeking an Organizing Director to lead a talented team of organizers working to build power among everyday people in Indiana toward a new politics. The Organizing Director role is primarily about working with people one-on-one and in teams to develop organizers and leaders: cultivating their day-to-day skills and political analysis and designing and maintaining systems so that staff and members can achieve strategic goals. This position requires a strong belief in the power, abilities, and intelligence of working-class people. The Director of Organizing works closely with staff to ensure that strong human-centered organizing is at the center of the organization. We seek an organizer who shares our values, our love of Indiana, and our vision for what the state could be and the power we can collectively build.

Hoosier Action is an organization dedicated to building the Indiana that we deserve. We have secured victories at the local, county, and state level. Most importantly, we are committed to developing the capacity and leadership of our membership. We organize primarily in Southern Indiana, bringing together moms, people of faith, young people, union members, students and teachers, and many who are struggling with the crisis of opioid addiction. As an organization we are dedicated to building the power of everyday Hoosiers in rural areas and small towns who are able to foment change through relationship-building, accountability, elections, legislation and direct action. We are headquartered in New Albany, Indiana which is conveniently located next to Louisville, Kentucky and the Ohio River.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop the organizing program
  • Ensure that organizing team members have consistent work plans, clear roles, and regular feedback to succeed in their individual roles and as a team. Invest in staff leadership and build deep relationships grounded in clear vision and responsibilities
  • Support training and mentoring of staff throughout organization, ensuring that they can integrate our organizing model, strategies, and priorities into their work
  • Develop and implement training curriculum on core organizing skills, including relational organizing , list management and growth, and leadership recruitment and development
  • Lead team in setting campaign strategy, including selecting targets, and integrating the organization’s communications, lobbying, and member-driven policy development into campaign plans
  • Collaborate with organizers to create outreach, member engagement, and leadership development plans to build organization’s base of power and execute campaign strategy
  • In close collaboration with the communications team, build campaign narratives and plans that integrate digital communications, social media, and member-facing communications that advance organizing goals and build our base of support
  • Lead policy development on campaigns, collaborating with relevant staff and partners to ensure policy goals that come from member organizing are viable and responsive to members’ needs
  • Meet directly with elected officials and other decision makers to advance campaign and policy goals, and build member leadership to directly advocate to lawmakers
  • Represent organization in a wide range of external settings, consistently advancing the organization’s interests and communicating our member-centered, power-building framework
  • Strengthen relationships and strategic collaboration with external partners, and foster connections to new partners
  • Support fundraising through assisting with grant application and report drafting, and participating in relationship building meetings to convey our organizing strategy to current and potential funders
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience working with community, labor, or electoral organizations where you had success in developing and winning campaigns
  • A minimum of 3 years supervising staff, with a strong track record of building teams and developing staff leadership; or 5 years experience of developing volunteer leaders and building teams of volunteers
  • A commitment to racial, gender and economic justice and their intersections, both inside and outside organizations
  • The ability and willingness to travel within southern Indiana regularly
  • A proven track record of leading successful organizing campaigns
  • Demonstrated track record of building relationships across lines of difference and in building up the leadership of others
  • Experience supervising diverse organizers/field staff
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft outlook, Word, Excel and similar software and social
  • Experience facilitating meetings and designing trainings
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and an openness to learning and sharing
  • Capacity to think strategically and analytically about social, economic, cultural, and political issues affecting communities
  • Willingness to occasionally travel out of state for conferences, trainings, etc. and to work occasional nights and weekends

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Salary range is $60,000-$70,000, based on experience and qualifications. Our competitive benefits package includes 100% of your personal medical, dental and vision insurance; a 401(k) plan; and paid time off at the end of December, in addition to paid vacation.APPLICATION PROCESS
