POSITION SUMMARY:

The Michigan United grassroots Public Health Navigator program has been in partnership with the Genesee County Health department since inception in May 2020. The work of our Navigators is incredibly important as we enter the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in light of the urgent need for large-scale vaccination to overcome the virus. Many of the communities that are most vulnerable to COVID-19 have the least access to information and resources to protect themselves and their families.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

●    Being the eyes and ears of the community

Being able to identify physical, emotional, and cultural needs to help community members access appropriate resources
Support, educate, and assist community members to navigate the systems that affect them
Having conversations and presentations regularly
Completing an average of 4 presentations per month (approximately 1 per week) with an average of 10-15 people at each presentation and connecting with 40-60 people each month, this number includes all the people in presentations and also individual conversations
Tracking data: including name, phone, email, home language, zip code, ethnicity and age at minimum.
Manage outreach efforts to targeted groups
Attend and participate in community stakeholder’s meetings which support the program and provide up to date information (i.e. Flint Communications Workgroup, Healthy Flint Research Coordinating Center COVID-19 Webinar)
Attend bi-weekly training/update meetings via Zoom
Further develop, maintain, and know about various health, wellness, and social services available in the Flint area, especially related to COVID-19.
Make referrals as appropriate. Duties include scheduling appointments, following up with residents, organizing community informational meetings and other needs that may come up during outreach.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

● Passion for our issues and vision of a more just world.

● Knowledge of public health, safety, and community organizing.

● Ability to use various communications media (i.e. zoom, google hangouts, Facebook, phone, text, etc.)

● Highly organized and self-starter.

● Ability to work in a team and supervise others in a team

● Have flexible work hours

● Experience in community organizing, with experience in grassroots leadership development preferred

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Fully vaccinated for COVID-19
