About MLK50
MLK50: Justice Through Journalism is a nonprofit newsroom in Memphis that focuses on the intersection of poverty, power, and policy. Launched in 2017, it aims to make a tangible difference in people’s lives through impactful journalism, aligned with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of economic justice.

Mission: Report on poverty, power, and policy, and witness movement making and lived experiences.

Vision: Echo Dr. King’s dream of a nation where workers thrive and policies support their success.

Impact:

Emergency Rental Assistance: Restarted the program, saving thousands from eviction.
Environmental Justice: Exposed attempts to route an oil pipeline through a Black neighborhood, leading to the project being abandoned.
Medical Debt Erasure: Investigative reporting led to the forgiveness of nearly $12 million in medical debt.
Legal Reforms: Prompted transparency in the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission’s operations.

The Opportunity
MLK50 seeks a Co-Executive Director to partner with the current Executive Editor. This leader will manage business operations, fundraising, and sustainability planning. They will also cultivate donor relationships, represent MLK50 publicly, and manage the Development Director and Chief Strategy Officer.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Vision & Leadership: Guide transformative changes, inspire staff, and identify emerging opportunities.
Organizational Management: Plan for financial sustainability, align systems and processes, and manage budgets.
Development Leadership & External Relationship-Building: Lead donor cultivation and fundraising strategies, represent MLK50 externally, and contribute to board development.
Candidate Profile
Ideal candidates will embrace shared leadership, have a deep commitment to justice through journalism, and demonstrate many of the following:

Leadership experience in nonprofit organizations.
Strong connection to MLK50’s mission and Memphis communities.
Budget management and strategic planning skills.
Proven fundraising and partnership-building success.
Team-oriented leadership fostering a supportive culture.

Compensation & Location
Salary: $125,000 – $140,000
Benefits: 100% employee healthcare, dental and vision coverage, professional development stipend, 401K match, and generous paid time off.
Location: Based in Memphis with hybrid schedule options.
