Research Coordinator

Status: Full-time with benefits

Salary:  $55,000-60,000 with Benefits

Location: Main office in Raleigh, NC; position is hybrid (3 days in office and 2 WFH), MUST be local or intend on moving to the area to be considered; requires frequent travel across the Triangle and other parts of the state.

NCAAT in Action (NCAATIA) is committed to supporting equity and justice for all by building political power among Asian Americans and allies in North Carolina through voter education, progressive advocacy, and leadership development.

About the position:  NCAAT is seeking a full-time Research Coordinator to broaden and support our efforts to inform and educate AAPI community in NC through candidate and issue-based research. The ideal candidate has research experience, a strong familiarity with political cycles and an eagerness and willingness to research issue areas relevant to the Asian American community in NC. The Research Coordinator will report to the Senior Development Manager but will work with all teams across the organization.

Responsibilities:

Perform issue-based research
Climate Justice
Research and compile information about climate justice impacts on Asian Americans
Gain a working knowledge of climate justice issues in North Carolina
Monitor new bills and legislative initiatives related to climate justice and/or environmental issues
Attend coalition meetings and represent the organization in such meetings as needed, with preparation support provided by Senior Development Manager
Redistricting
Research and compile information about redistricting impacts on Asian Americans
Gain a working knowledge of redistricting and gerrymandering issues in North Carolina
Monitor new bills and legislative initiatives related to redistricting
Attend coalition meetings and represent the organization in such meetings as needed, with preparation support provided by Head of Political Education and Engagement
Occasionally, assist with other research-based issues as needed and brought up by team members
Own the tracking of relevant bills and court decisions
Support NCAAT’s areas of focus by tracking local, state and federal  bills and legislative movement on any matters around democracy reform, immigration, climate justice and reproductive rights
Monitor major court decisions that could impact these issues in North Carolina
Flag potential opportunities for engagement to the Communications and Political Teams
Learn to use legislative tracking software
Attending legislative hearings in person and/or virtually as needed
Support advocacy campaigns by gathering researching and working with comms team and politicial team to draft letters or data/ve team to draft scripts
Assist in creating a process for effective tracking of bills and court decisions
Own conducting candidate and election research
Attend weekly political team meetings and share political and legislative updates
Monitor candidate filings and update candidate spreadsheet
Conduct background research into candidates during the endorsement review process
Assist in researching potential candidates for our leadership pipeline
Assist in creating a process for effective tracking and sharing of information on candidate and election research
Assist with prospective grants and funders
Work with Senior Development Manager to research prospective funders, new grant opportunities, and foundations/organizations

Core competencies:

Ability to work collaboratively and independently
Excellent research skills evidenced by experience working on research projects with a preference for knowledge of political or campaign issues
Experience with synthesizing information and research findings into written summaries, briefs, or abstracts
Experience with Google Suite, especially Google Sheets, and familiarity with research platforms such as EBSCO
Willingness to work non-traditional hours including weekends and evenings during election season
Technical fluency and comfort in learning digital tools to collaborate remotely with a team
Interest in keeping a pulse on local, state, and federal policies that impact Asian American communities
Strong attention to detail
Demonstrated adherence to project timelines and timely responsiveness to ad-hoc tasks
Demonstrated commitment to social justice and equity
Demonstrated interest in political and civic engagement
Driver’s license and reliable access to a car
Nice to have – Basic skills in any Asian language
