Overview

We are searching for an Organizing Director to play a major role in building youth power and transforming NH’s political system! This role is an opportunity to join a rapidly growing, powerful movement of young people across NH, and expand the movement’s reach, membership, and capacity with NHYM’s hubs and distributed volunteer program. This is also an opportunity to plan and execute powerful campaigns, get creative with strategy and tactics, build relationships across the NH organizing community, elect progressive champions, and play a major role in making NH a state that works for everyone.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE
Our ideal candidate is an up-and-coming organizer who is ready to take a leadership role and put their skills to work building youth power that will transform NH’s political system. They have prior organizing experience (ideally youth organizing) and are ready to use their skills to make campaign decisions with a team, and design & manage organizing programs grounded in their vision. They are ready to mentor young leaders, ideally drawing from their own experience with successfully organizing young people. They are a people person, comfortable working with and leading teams, and have a motivational presence. The ideal candidate is also a young person who currently lives in, or plans to move to, New Hampshire.

RESPONSIBILITIES
This position will be managed by the Organizing Director or Executive Director.

You will:

  • Co-own the implementation of NHYM’s organizing work for 2023, including municipal elections, community and campus organizing campaigns, and potentially presidential primary work
  • Manage a team of field organizers and community organizers
  • Build and execute field plans for 2024 legislative advocacy and general election work
  • Build and hold relationships with volunteer leaders and staff at partner organizations
  • Help plan and execute with large statewide direct actions and event planning
  • Be a member of the NHYM director team, holding significant responsibility for the success of your work and the organization as a whole, as well as making a long-term commitment

PRIORITY SKILLS, ATTITUDES, AND EXPERIENCES
We’re looking for someone with:

  • 2+ years organizing experience as a volunteer leader or staff member
  • An understanding of core community organizing tactics like recruitment, leadership development, community engagement, and direct action
  • An understanding of core electoral organizing tactics like phone banking, door knocking, and mass texting
  • Strong commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice and their intersections, both inside and outside the organization
  • Ability to work closely in a team setting with consistent and clear communication
  • Strong personal organization with ability to consistently manage your tasks and time and be self directed at times
  • Strong desire to learn and grow as an organizer, manager, and leader

DESIRED SKILLS, ATTITUDES, AND EXPERIENCES
It would be nice if you have:

  • Experience specifically as a student organizer or volunteer leader (so you can better mentor students and volunteers)
  • Experience planning and managing organizing campaigns, including electoral programs
  • Experience managing staff organizers or fellows
  • Experience planning direct actions and events
  • Experience with EveryAction and/or VAN, or other digital organizing tools
  • Knowledge of New Hampshire politics and its organizing ecosystem

HOW WE HIRE DIRECTORS
NHYM is led by a team of directors (6 currently), who lead their respective departments and work together to lead the organization in a largely horizontal structure facilitated by the Executive Director. Because of this unique structure, it’s extra important that new team members are a really good fit for NHYM, and NHYM is a good fit for them.

To ensure a great fit, and a smooth onboarding into the role, we use the following process:

  1. You complete the hiring process and you’re offered the role—yay!
  2. You join the team as Organizing Deputy Director; a role with the responsibilities described above, but tailored specifically for you to get used to the work and the organization, and receive extra support as your transition in.
    A starting salary will be determined with the process we use for all deputy director roles. You’ll get the benefits described below.
  3. You’re Organizing Deputy Director for 3 months, then we check in about the goodness of fit and if everything’s good you move into the full Organizing Director role with a long term commitment. Continuing as Deputy Director beyond 3 months is also an option.
    You’ll get a raise through the salary assessment process we use for all director roles, benefits will stay the same as below.

COMPENSATION AND COMMITMENT
This is a full time position (35-40 hours/week on average).

This is a salaried position, with annual raises and quarterly bonuses. Salary range for deputy directors (your first 3 months) is $47,000 to $50,000. Salary range for directors is $49,000 to $52,000. Salaries are determined using NHYM’s salary assessment process, which accounts for previous experience, time with the organization, and nature of the role to make additions to the base salary. You can expect a salary within these ranges after completing the salary assessment.

This position has benefits including: paid time off including 20 holidays/year, 10 vacation days, and unlimited personal time; full health, dental, and vision insurance (at little or no premium cost to you); gas reimbursement; and access to a technology and wellness fund.

Start date is flexible. Ideally, the person filling this role begins before May 22.

Ideally, we are looking for someone to commit to at least two years of leadership in this role.
