Communications Associate Job Description


NYCET is seeking a Communications Manager to lead a multi-tiered communications strategy to advance our campaigns, raise our organizational profile, and to communicate our message to a variety of audiences. The successful candidate should be an excellent writer and editor, who is comfortable communicating on a variety of platforms including social media, press releases, web copy, and email. You should be able to tell a good story, and should view storytelling as a community organizing tool. The right candidate should also be interested in New York State & New York City politics, and regularly read local media. This position would be the only full-time communications role at NYCET,  but would work closely with staff and members to achieve organizational goals. This is a full-time position.


Job Responsibilities


Media Outreach and Engagement

Manage incoming requests and respond for comments/press releases/etc
Organize and support press conferences and events
Edit and draft press releases, media advisories, op-ed, quotes
Build and maintain an active and organized press list
Draft newsletters and other email blasts
Coordinate the production and release of NYCET’s mid-year and annual report
Support creation and provide review of external communications with stakeholders including grant proposals and reports


Social Media Accounts

Produce and curate content for social media platforms including daily engagement on Twitter, facebook, and instagram
Create templates for social media graphics for NYCET team to update and use independently
Set and track goals for social media growth and impact using analytics
Attend organizational events and provide real-time content (e.g., live tweeting, Facebook livestream)


Digital Assets

Draft and update content for NYCET’s website
Manage website design and upgrades
Assist in the formatting and sending of fundraising, advocacy, and other emails as needed
Evaluate impact and effectiveness of email using data and analytics
Manage and maintain NYCET’s media archive



Create packaged content for NYCET programs (GOTV, Redistricting, etc.)
Develop toolkits, templates, and best practices for effective communication
Facilitate occasional media/spokesperson trainings for table partners and staff


Requirements / Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be an energetic, self-motivated individual who has strong interpersonal, writing, and problem solving skills, with a keen attention to detail. A deep commitment to social justice is required.

The ideal candidate will have:

Commitment to NYCET mission
Excellent writing, editing, research and interpersonal skills.
At least 2 years of experience in a communications role, with a preference for experience in a community or union organizing, advocacy or similar setting.
Proficiency with social media, including Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
Experience using data to analyze effectiveness of social media and email.
Able to write and produce content quickly, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
Have a commitment to strategic communications as a necessary component of power building.
Meticulous attention to detail and strong proofreading skills.
A strong commitment to teamwork and to working with and promoting the leadership of people directly affected by the issues we work on.
Excellent organizational skills, and able to simultaneously manage multiple projects.
Proficiency with common business software (e.g. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email clients). Adobe graphics programs and fundraising database programs is a plus.
Experience in or willingness to learn Canva, Mailchimp, Squarespace or similar.


Compensation: $50,000 – $60,000 dependent on experience.  Benefits for eligible New York Civic Engagement Table employees include but are not limited to: 100% employer paid medical insurance, 401(k) savings plan with employer contribution, paid vacation, personal leave, sick, and parental leave.
