ABOUT THE NEW YORK CIVIC ENGAGEMENT TABLE
The New York Civic Engagement Table (NYCET) builds power with communities of color, immigrants, poor and working people to tackle racial and economic inequality in New York. Collaborating with a diverse group of social justice and service-based organizations, we produce lifelong voters, develop leaders, and win concrete changes in people’s lives. NYCET fosters a culture of innovation and creativity by piloting and implementing tools, tactics, and organizing strategies. Through our seamless and continuous coordination of electoral, base-building, issue advocacy and mass engagement strategies, we work to create a better democracy.
The Hudson Valley Civic Engagement Table (HVCET) is a regional body of NYCET dedicated to working with Hudson Valley community organizations.
ABOUT THE HUDSON VALLEY CIVIC ENGAGEMENT TABLE
As a regional table of the New York Civic Engagement Table, HVCET is a coalition of Hudson Valley organizations based primarily in Westchester, Orange, Ulster, and Dutchess counties committed to working together to build the electoral power of low-income people of color needed to transform inequitable structural and political systems to achieve an inclusive and representative democracy within the region.
HUDSON VALLEY CIVIC ENGAGEMENT COORDINATOR JOB DESCRIPTION
Hudson Valley is experiencing a rapidly shifting population. Growing diversity, combined with increasing inequality and the political importance of this region makes it a high priority for organizing and empowering communities of color.
The Hudson Valley Civic Engagement Coordinator will facilitate the merging of multiple key elements of the New York Civic Engagement Table: coalition building, leadership development, and the coordination of member organization’s Get Out the Vote campaigns. The HV Civic Engagement Coordinator will lead the implementation of strategic civic engagement campaigns and will assist and advise table members and staff. When important to the local work of the Hudson Valley, the HV Civic Engagement Coordinator may also support broader coalition building with HVCET members by engaging them with broader statewide issue campaigns such as the 2020 Census and Voting Reform.
The HVCET Civic Engagement Coordinator will work with member organizations to identify opportunities each year in which to build power for low-income communities and communities of color over the long term. Our ideal candidate will have experience working with and managing coalitions; training and supporting leaders and organizers in the field. The HVCET Civic Engagement Coordinator needs to have strong working knowledge of the changing political landscape of Hudson Valley, and New York state, a deep racial analysis of the inequities found in the Hudson Valley, and competency building long-term relationships across race and class.
The ideal candidate has experience in community and/or political organizing, strong analytical and quantitative skills, a passion for progressive politics, social media and experience working with spreadsheet and database programs.
Works closely with the HVCET members to develop regional civic engagement strategies, establish shared annual work plans with members, and leads that work with HVCET members and the broader NYCET staff
Convenes regional meetings of member organizations for shared strategic planning
Conducts regular meetings and consultations with organizers, partner staff, leaders, and community members; coordinate collaborative projects among HV-based groups
Coordinates regional civic engagement programs including voter registration and GOTV
Supports the work and development of key Hudson Valley Civic Engagement Table member organization’s Integrated Civic Engagement programming
Coordinates with NYCET staff on statewide campaigns: Redistricting, Voting Reform, Fair Elections etc.
Represents HVCET in internal and external forums and meetings as a leading expert in strategic civic engagement techniques; develop and maintain relationships with other relevant table partners and community organizations, outside consultants, and other issue activists to promote HVCET/NYCET interests.
Works closely with NYCET Executive Director/Deputy Director and state-wide data and training staff
Keeps the NYCET Executive Director fully informed on a regular basis on issues affecting HVCET
Supports fundraising for HVCET’s annual budget and supports the fundraising associated with HVCET-based activities of member organizations: grant writing, meetings with donors and foundations.
Prepares and submits regular and ad hoc reports on departmental activities as required.
Minimum of 2 years of political/ electoral organizing, community organizing, union organizing, and/ or legislative issue advocacy experience required
Strong knowledge of Hudson Valley and New York state political and policy landscape
Excellent written and verbal communication
Self-motivated, adept at problem solving, and able to thrive in a fast-paced work environment dedicated to social, economic, and racial justice
Ability to work well under pressure, while maintaining a high level of detail orientation and meeting deadlines.
Ability to work with a broad range of people possessing different skill levels.
Experience training racially, ethnically and economically diverse leaders, organizers and volunteers; facilitation and training skills
Experience working in coalition with partners, or experience working in diverse communities, particularly in communities of color.
Experience in fundraising and grant writing preferred
Demonstrated commitment to racial and gender equity and record of success working with communities of color, women, low-income people, LGBTQIA individuals, and other historically marginalized communities.
Commitment to approaching the work in an inclusive and empathetic way
Spanish language skills are desired but not required
Compensation: $50,000 – $60,000 dependent on experience. Benefits for eligible New York Civic Engagement Table employees include but are not limited to: 100% employer paid medical insurance, 401(k) savings plan with employer contribution, paid vacation, personal leave, sick, and parental leave.
Location: Hudson Valley preferably in Westchester, Orange, Dutchess, or Ulster county. In addition, regular travel throughout the region and occasional travel to other regions in New York.
