30+ years of Housing Justice & Tenant Organizing

Position Available: Lead Housing Justice Community Organizer

Mothers on the Move / Madres en Movimiento (MOM) is a grassroots community-based organization founded in 1992 by a determined group of parents and community residents that refused to accept that local children would be victims of racism and neglect. MOM’s founding mission is to train low-income people of color to take strategic leadership roles in their communities. “Real People Making Real Change! Gente Real Haciendo Cambios Reales!”

MOM organizes shared resources, benefits, and decision-making power for a future with clean air, well-resourced and community-controlled schools, safe streets, green space, good jobs, and more control over the wealth that our labor creates. We work at the intersections of racial, economic, gender, and climate justice; linking the issues of education, housing conditions, environmental justice, economic development, and health. Our signature style is to develop leaders among the directly impacted even as we build shared solutions. We aim to improve individual lives while also changing the conditions that produce hardship. Our staff, board, and members are all from our immediate neighborhood, all Black or LatinX, and build power collectively to resolve issues we face together.

We organize primarily in Longwood, Mott Haven, Hunts Point, and Port Morris; South Bronx neighborhoods that are home to primarily Latinx community members from Puerto Rico, Honduras, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic; African-American, Caribbean, and West African immigrants. We strengthen our community core with space and support for emerging projects, tenant associations, job training, worker-owned cooperative initiatives, and cultural and educational events.
