PA – Statewide Communication Director Job Description

One Pennsylvania seeks a highly motivated, talented, and dynamic individual to serve as the Statewide Communications Director. Reporting to the Executive Directors is responsible for creating, implementing, and managing a comprehensive communications plan for the organization that will broaden the reach and impact of the organization. This position will be a critical partner in actualizing our messaging and branding.

This position will serve on the organization’s Core Leadership Team.



Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Executive Directors, Organizing Director, and Development Director to develop communications strategies that will broaden the organization’s reach and deepen its impact;
  • Develop and execute media strategies to advance legislative and other campaign activities of One Pennsylvania and our members;
  • Manage all media contacts, including writing & distributing all media releases and building relationships with print, broadcast, and news media journalists;
  • Develop and refine the organization’s core messages to ensure consistency;
  • Oversee and increase social media engagement;
  • Coaches, trains, and develops One Pennsylvania members and staff as media spokespeople and serves as a spokesperson for the organization with the media, when appropriate;
  • Seizes real-time media opportunities to advance our values, position, and brand;
  • Anticipates, prevents, and, if necessary, manages crisis communications;
  • Drafts materials to empower One Pennsylvania members to participate in campaign activities, including sample talking points, press advisories and releases, op-eds, memos, and other materials, as needed;
  • Develops and executes online strategy to tell our story, engage members, and advance campaign goals and leads strategic planning for digital work overall;
  • Produces detailed reports of communications activities for staff and leadership and promotional materials for a variety of audiences;
  • All other duties assigned.

Key Qualifications

  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Prior experience building relationships with members of the mediaedia; and ideally (though not required) has existing relationships in Philadelphia, Delaware County, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and/or national outlets.
  • Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing strategies.
  • Self-starter, able to work independently; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives.
  • Able to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to coach and support leaders as spokespersons.
  • Experience working with social justice or political organizations.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure and juggle multiple projects simultaneously.

Conditions: Ability to work hours exceeding stated office hours to get the job done;; ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends when necessary. The position will be based in Pittsburgh or Philadelphia, with Harrisburg and Delaware County responsibilities. Owning a car as a licensed, insured operator is required. One PA provides mileage reimbursement at the federal rate and lodging when working away from home.

Compensation: Salary of $85,000-$113,000 annually and benefits including defined benefit pension (with contributions beginning after six months of employment), optional 401K plan, generous paid time off, and fully paid health insurance.
