BACKGROUND  

OneAmerica (OA) was established in 2001 by U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal and has since grown to become a locally and nationally recognized leader in advancing immigrant, civil, and human rights. We utilize grassroots organizing, policy advocacy, and civic/electoral engagement to promote justice in three areas: immigration, education and early learning, and democracy. Our family of organizations consists of OneAmerica (501(c)3), OneAmerica Votes (OAV) (501(c)4), and OneAmerica Votes Justice Fund (PAC).

POSITION DESCRIPTION  

The Senior Manager of Power Building will report to the Political Director and oversee OneAmerica and OneAmerica Votes power-building program. The Senior Manager of Power Building will be responsible for developing and implementing organizing programs through the lens of building power. OneAmerica and our family of organizations are working to rebuild our organizing team and base-building campaign strategy. A critical component of this work will be to build the Organizing Team and invest in staff and community leaders to lead powerful base-building campaigns through our issue and electoral work. This will include strengthening collaboration and culture while establishing systems for internal communication and coordination with other departments and teams that are rooted in building power and our membership base.

The ideal candidate will bring a background in organizing with deep power analysis to this work, using their skills as a confident, visionary, relational leader to build authentic relationships while managing multiple priorities with impeccable follow-through. We are a hybrid organization. This position is based out of our Seattle office with required travel throughout Washington state.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

Campaigns strategy – 40% 

  • Manage organizing staff to develop and implement OA’s issue campaigns in our core issue areas of immigration, education, and democracy reform that invests in policy and organizing staff and leaders to move a core narrative or legislative fight through direct action, legislative advocacy, electoral politics, and public accountability with elected leaders
  • Guide 2023 leader-led issue campaign team development through a process of power mapping, narrative building, and issue cutting to develop a campaign and leadership development strategy for our issue-based organizing work
  • Work alongside OA & OAV’s Field Manager to implement a strategic direct voter contact program that registers New American voters, builds our membership base, develops staff and leaders, and strategically targets geographies that will move our issue campaigns forward
  • Work alongside Political Director and Field Manager to implement OneAmerica Votes’ candidate development work

Management & leadership development – 40% 

  • Develop and implement a staff and leader training program to deliver core organizing, political education, narrative and base-building trainings throughout the calendar year
  • Manage a team of 5 – 8 organizers and hold them accountable to building a strong immigrant building and accountability as part of their core responsibilities
  • Work with organizers to build visions for their leaders, and mentor them in base-building and campaign development
  • Run bi-weekly Organizing Team Meetings that launch power building work, invest in organizer’s skills and track progress and practice accountability with organizers

Implementation of organizing strategy & theory of change – 20% 

  • Build a strategy for OneAmerica’s monthly membership meetings as a space for new community leaders to get to know the organization, for leadership development, to bring new dues-paying members into the organization, and to launch and organize staff and community leaders around of collective power building program through campaigns, elections, and narrative work
  • Build a team of organizers and staff who are responsible for managing programming, turnout, logistics, and follow-up
  • Co-create and develop base building strategy with Political Director
  • Attend OA’s Senior Leadership Team Meetings and integrate other Senior Managers and Directors into the power building strategy
  • Build money power through owning a set of relationships with foundations seeking new grants for organizing and leadership development work as well as cultivating a base of major donors

QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES  

OneAmerica is seeking candidates who are passionate about our mission and are highly proactive. While no one candidate will embody all the qualifications below, our ideal candidate would bring:

Required:

  • A strong analysis of power and racial equity with a commitment to build power in immigrant and refugee communities by leading with relationships
  • A minimum of 3 years of work experience in organizing and base building, including electoral, union, and/or community organizing with demonstrated track record of building a base of volunteer leaders/members
  • 2 – 4 years of people and program management experience with a track record of overseeing a team or department
  • 2 – 3 years analyzing and advocating for policy rooted in social justice with analysis and strategy that builds power and measures success accordingly
  • 2 – 3 years experience leading issue and electoral campaigns rooted in systems change and leadership development

Preferred:

  • Skilled communication abilities to train on organizing principles and techniques
  • Bilingual or multilingual and connection to and/or lived experience as an immigrant/refugee
  • Strategic thinking and excellent project management and follow through
  • Excellent group facilitation and coalition-building skills and an ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with diverse allies and leaders
  • Ability to motivate, mentor, and supervise teams, tracking progress towards goals and building an internal team focused on achieving high results
  • A spirit of self-motivation, ownership, and collaborative initiative – ability to thrive independently and with a team, taking a project successfully from beginning to end with broad guidance
  • Ability to thrive within a fast-paced environment while maintaining effective time management, organization methods, and adapting to changing priorities to successfully meet deliverables

Other requirements:

  • Willingness to accommodate community-based scheduling needs, such as evening and weekend meetings
  • Access to reliable transportation and willingness to travel throughout Washington State and nationally on occasion
