Who We Are

Political Research Associates (PRA) is a national nonprofit devoted to supporting movements that are building a more just and inclusive democratic society. We provide research, strategy, and briefings to expose movements, institutions, and ideologies that undermine human rights. PRA publishes The Public Eye magazine quarterly.  The PRA staff union is a unit of the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, Local 32035 of C.W.A. Our office is located in Somerville, Massachusetts.

You are eager to lead and cultivate a team of committed colleagues and contributors. You are a thoughtful strategist with a passion for building relationships.You are proud of your results on behalf of innovative nonprofit organizations or in the philanthropic sector.



The Development Director manages all fundraising and revenue-generating activities for the organization. Along with the Executive Director, this position is responsible for raising PRA’s annual budget ($3.2M in FY22).


Create PRA’s annual development plan in consultation with the Development Team, Managing Director, Executive Director and Board.
Grow a major gifts program including identification, cultivation and solicitation of major donors.
Oversee development team, including staff and consultants.
Oversee grant seeking including strategy, proposal writing, and reporting requirements.
Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects and new donors at all levels.
Represent PRA at public events, meetings, and other gatherings.
Participate in organizational leadership as a member of the Directors Team.


Content creation

Lead creation of compelling development-related copy, including grants, proposals, reports, letters, emails, Annual Report, and other materials.
Work with the Development and Communications teams to generate effective development-related outreach to supporters.
Prepare donor briefing materials and presentations.
Produce board reports and presentations



Serve as a key point of contact for the Board of Directors.
Manage effective systems for tracking donors, prospects, and other organizational contacts.
Ensure timely processing, recording, and acknowledgment of donations.
Supervise and build skills of development team staff and oversee consultants.
Maintain gift recognition programs.
Ensure all Staff and Board understand fundraising and budget needs of the organization as related to programmatic goals and priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum of 5 years’ experience in fundraising/development field. Preference will be given to candidates with experience fundraising for social justice causes and/or leading a development team.
Strong commitment to the mission of PRA, passion for social justice, and the ability to articulate our vision and values.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including superior writing and the ability to effectively manage a variety of relationships.
Strong organizational skills.
Staff supervision and management experience.
Strong knowledge of current trends in charitable giving and the social justice field
Working knowledge of donor software and databases.
Positive attitude and ability to be flexible and work under pressure. The right candidate will be self-directed and will appreciate working collaboratively with colleagues across the organization.



Current salary range $72,000-$92,000 negotiable commensurate with experience. The benefits package includes generous paid time off for vacation, health, and flexible holidays, as well as 100% employer-paid medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance. PRA also offers a 5% employer contribution of salary towards a socially responsible retirement fund, as well as fabulous colleagues in a collaborative working environment and access to professional development.


Note regarding COVID-19 office access: PRA has implemented a variety of pandemic precautions and measures to prioritize staff safety and public health. The Somerville office closed in March 2020 and we plan to continue to limit access through December 2021.
