Essential Duties: The primary responsibilities include state and federal campaign finance reporting, and compliance program strategy and advising.


Position summary: 
The Associate Director of Compliance will build out and maintain a robust campaign finance reporting and compliance program for Run for Something. This role is part of the critical infrastructure to support our programming that recruits and supports young, diverse progressives to run for local office. The Associate Director of Compliance will ensure that all state and federal campaign finance reporting requirements are tracked and reported accurately, in partnership with an external compliance firm and RFS counsel. This role will also build out the overall compliance program strategy and serve as an advisor for RFS staff.


The Associate Director of Compliance will help RFS accomplish our strategic imperatives via:

  • State and federal campaign finance reporting (50% of time):
    • Coordinate with external compliance firm and counsel to ensure all state and federal campaign finance reports for all entities (including the main non-federal 527 PAC and a growing number of state-level PACs) are accurate and filed on time
    • Partner with Director of Finance & Compliance to ensure all revenue and expenditures, including in-kind donations, are tracked according to reporting requirements
    • Maintain reporting calendars; ensure smooth reporting and approval processes for all stakeholders (internal staff, committee treasurers, etc)
    • Make recommendations for updating internal compliance policies in keeping with best practices
    • Oversee disbursements of candidates contributions, including in-kind donation acknowledgements; ensure funds are properly distributed and tracked
    • Support the Director of Finance & Compliance and the overall Finance & Compliance team on related tasks
  • Compliance program strategy and advising (50% of time):
    • Develop an overarching strategy and standardized processes and policies for the RFS campaign finance reporting program; consider relevant stakeholder input into decision making
    • In partnership with Director of Finance & Compliance, external counsel and external compliance firm, make recommendations for how to best execute current and new programming
    • Make recommendations for efficiencies and improvements as the program grows
    • Serve as advisor for RFS staff regarding existing and new programming as related to non-profit finance law and campaign finance requirements; ensure RFS activities are compliant with relevant state and federal laws
    • Lead a standing weekly call with RFS counsel; collect agenda items and compliance questions from staff; gather advice from counsel and align on strategy; report back decisions and actions; maintain database of decisions and recommendations for future reference
    • Create and lead compliance-related trainings for staff as needed
    • Stay informed of updates to state and federal campaign finance law affecting RFS activities
    • In partnership with the Director of Finance & Compliance, create the strategy for how the Compliance program should expand to meet the needs of the organization through vendors and staff


Key Goals 

  • All state and federal reports are accurate and submitted on time; overall process, stakeholders, and calendar is managed smoothly
  • Candidates receive accurate disbursements, in-kind letters or other needs on schedule
  • Staff receives timely and accurate advise on relevant legal and compliance issues
  • The compliance program scales according to an overarching strategy that meets the needs of stakeholders while following manageable processes and procedures



  • Strong understanding of state and federal campaign finance laws and reporting; experience with campaign finance, compliance, or law for campaigns and/or political committees
  • Experience operating campaign finance programs in multiple states is must; experience operating operating campaign finance programs in multiple states in the same role, with an understanding of how to synthesize conflicting requirements into a cohesive and manageable compliance program, is a plus
  • Strong analytical and process-building skills
  • Able to bring structure to programs and process; experience building new programs from the ground up is a plus
  • Able to translate complex legal and compliance recommendations into layman’s terms for staff members; able to translate compliance and legal recommendations into action plans
  • Experience with NGP, ActBlue, and/or other campaign finance software
  • Basic familiarity with accounting principles and practices
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and contribute to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment

Work Environment 
Run for Something is (and always has been and will be) a remote office environment; you will collaborate with colleagues who are based across the United States. You should be prepared to either work from home or a location of your choosing.

When it is safe to do so, this position will require attendance at approximately 2 all-staff events per year, which may include overnight travel.

This position requires the ability to work core hours, Monday through Thursday.

Essential Physical Requirements 

  • As this is a remote position, the person in this position must be able to communicate with colleagues and partners via phone, including conference and video calls, as well as written communication such as Slack and email.
  • The position requires the ability to work on a computer for all or part of the work day.
  • The position requires the ability to attend events which may encompass all or part of the work day.
  • This position will include travel, as described above.


Compensation & Benefits 
Salary for this position is set at $120,000. In order to counter pay inequality and uphold internal parity, salaries are non-negotiable for new and current employees. Run for Something salary bands for a given staff level are benchmarked to the 75th percentile for our sector, and all new employees are paid at the entry point of those bands. Employees then have the opportunity to progress through current salary bands through annual cost of living increases and performance-based pay increases, and into new salary bands through promotions.
