About People’s Action/Institute and Center for Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ)

People’s Action Institute (501c3), and sister organization People’s Action (501c4), are national progressive organizations supporting the mobilization and leadership of the grassroots in support of an agenda that reflects people over profits. People’s Action/Institute builds the power of poor and working people, in rural, suburban, and urban areas to win change through issue campaigns and elections.  

The Center for Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ) is a national environmental justice organization established in 1981 and is based in Falls Church, VA (DC Metro Area). In 2017, CHEJ became a project of People’s Action Institute (PAI). Our philosophy is to teach and empower grassroots groups and individuals to build upon their strengths, through our research and technical assistance, trainings and organizing. This position involves providing every day explanations that will garner insight into the complexities of environmental science issues for the many different players in both the science and public arenas. An emphasis is placed on the importance of empowering citizens by analyzing data for advocacy grassroots organizing work.

The Opportunity

CHEJ is looking for a dedicated professional that understands environmental justice issues that are affecting all communities throughout the country.   

Overview of the Position/What will you do

The primary function of the Science Associate is to assist the Science Director. In doing so, the Science Associate will be responsible for: 

Research and maintain the scientific/technical and information needed to support the scientific/technical department;Provide scientific/technical assistance to grassroots community groups;Research information needed to respond to telephone calls, emails and correspondence that ask scientific/technical questions;Translate technical jargon/information into easy-to-read fact sheets; fact packs and guidebooks;Critically review technical reports that would include engineering reports, health studies, and general environmental data (i.e., soil, drinking water, groundwater, surface water and ambient air data;Communicate these results in writing (preparing Letter Reports), over the phone or in public forums/meetings to local community groups;Provide science and subject matter training via webinars and in communities or other events;Conduct in person and conference call presentations as requested;Plan and execute science and subject matter skill trainings for local groups and activists as needed;Work with local communities to help them understand scientific/technical information;Work with local communities to help them understand the role that scientific/technical information plays in the success of their local organizing work;Contribute to the development of publications that assist groups in strengthening their organizing capacity by helping them understand the power of science and technical information and what role it plays in the success of their group;Attend technical and other meeting as a representative of CHEJ; andAssist Science Director in carrying out these and other related tasks, as assigned.Other Duties as Assigned

The ideal Science Associate should have the following experience and qualifications:

Masters Degree in Science Required, Ph.D. PreferredStrong commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice and their intersections, both inside and outside the organization.Experience working with grassroots communities and organizations.Ability to work with diverse people and organizations

Compensation and Benefits:

Status: Full time, Regular, Exempt, benefits eligible

Salary Range: $60,000-$65,000

Location: Based in our Chicago, IL office. Washington, D.C. or remote locations may be considered.  

Reports to: CHEJ’s Science Director
