Overview
As Slingshot’s Donor Engagement Manager, you will be a part of a new and growing organization, building the go-to hub for environmental health and justice organizing in the Northeast. You will engage with our dedicated and inspiring donor base, while also helping to expand to new supporters in the region. You will be a part of fueling our transformational work building community power to take on some of the worst environmental health threats in the region.
What you’ll do:
The Donor Engagement Manager will be responsible for raising funds from grassroots donors, as well as crafting and implementing fundraising strategies that enable Slingshot to carry out its mission. You will build deep relationships with your own portfolio of donors, in addition to supporting Slingshot team members in setting and making progress toward individual fundraising goals. Major elements of the position include:
Strategy and support. Develop an annual fundraising plan and fundraising program budget. Support team-wide goal setting to meet budgetary needs. Support staff in meeting individual donor goals and analyze team performance quarterly. Train and supervise staff on donor work. Grow the organization’s donor pool and individual giving through research and prospecting.
Manage donor drives. Prep materials, scripts, stories, and trainings for three full-team major donor drives each year. Organize and facilitate calling blocks, trainings, and goal-setting to concentrate fundraising efforts and encourage shared accountability over three full days for each drive. Organize and run additional personal fundraising drives as needed to meet your goals.
Donor Fundraising. Identify, cultivate, and meet with donors, personally managing 60-80 donor relationships. Build relationships with donors through sharing personal and organizational stories and updates, regular touchpoints, and personal acknowledgements.
Systems management. In consultation with the team, manage and update internal donor tracking systems including Slingshot’s donor database. Regularly import fundraising data to ensure accurate and timely tracking and conduct data cleanup as necessary. Track fundraising program expenses and submit vendor invoices.
Organizational materials. Work with the Grants and Communications Coordinator to help develop external fundraising and cultivation materials – e.g., one-pagers, brochures, postcards, annual reports, and holiday cards.
Donor cultivation & stewardship. Work with the Grants and Communications Coordinator to develop and implement a communications and cultivation plan for the organization, including regular email and mail appeals for all donors. Create and implement individualized stewardship plans for top donors.
Developing vision and infrastructure. Establish, develop materials for, and implement a donor membership program and a planned giving program. Develop a vision for using events to support organizational fundraising, through house parties and/or building sponsorship opportunities into existing movement building events.
Grantseeking. Participate in team grantseeking with a small portfolio of foundations, cultivating relationships as well as writing proposals and reports.
Key qualifications:
At least three years experience in development, including a background in direct fundraising and prospect strategy;
Experience with donor management or CRM software;
Experience securing major gifts ($500 or more).
Experience living in or working with people in frontline communities, especially people of color, Indigenous communities, immigrants, and low-income people;
Strong verbal and written communication skills–you enjoy spending time with people and building new relationships;
Flexibility in adjusting to a growing organization;
Passion for working with frontline communities facing environmental injustice;
A passion for racial, economic, and environmental justice; a strong commitment to working for a just, inclusive, and better world;
A driver’s license, preferably with a car you are willing and able to drive for work.
Have coordinated team projects; have the ability to hold other people accountable
Preferred qualifications:
Communications experience is a plus
Experience in donor meetings and making big financial asks
Structure and team at Slingshot: Slingshot practices shared leadership and consensus decision making. This position will be part of the ongoing development of equitable leadership structures. Supervision: This position reports to one of our Co-Executive Directors and involves collaboration with and reporting to other staff members based on project management. This position does not have any supervision responsibilities.
Location: We are looking to hire candidates in the greater Boston area. This is a remote position, with about 25% time spent in the field on in-person donor visits and in-person staff retreats. Some overnight travel is required.
Salary and benefits: Slingshot offers an extensive benefits plan and an open, inclusive, and accepting work environment where differences are highly respected. The salary for the Donor Engagement Manager is $65,000 – $72,000, depending on experience, with a benefits package which includes medical and dental coverage, a retirement savings plan, vacation, sick time, and holidays. We have a strong model for donor fundraising and a deep commitment to providing the support and training needed for our staff, including encouraging outside professional development opportunities.
