THE ORGANIZATION: TakeAction Minnesota is a multiracial people’s organization that brings democracy alive in communities across our state. We connect individuals and organizations to each other, creating a powerful force that makes change happen where it wasn’t possible before. Since its founding 14 years ago, TakeAction Minnesota has grown its breadth and depth. Our membership has grown 10-fold and touches every legislative district in the state. Our social media presence is robust. Our grassroots leadership is well-trained and shapes and implements the strategy of our various campaigns. As a result, TakeAction Minnesota has a track record of shifting the political landscape, advancing democracy and justice through bold policy campaigns, grassroots organizing, leadership development, movement politics, and strategic communications.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Human Resources Director will provide leadership to foster a collaborative and inclusive culture at TakeAction Minnesota, a workplace with people who have diverse backgrounds, viewpoints, and experiences. The Human Resources Director will work with the leadership team to help staff members continually develop in their jobs, learn from the communities we organize, and contribute in a high-performing environment. The Human Resources Director will plan, direct, coordinate, and manage initiatives to optimize staff culture.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS — Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

Human Resources Administration  

  • Oversee recruitment and hiring strategy.  Coach staff in creating job descriptions, reviewing applications, and developing hiring committees.  Design interview processes.
  • Support proactive candidate recruitment.
  • Oversee onboarding and offboarding processes, including exit interviews.
  • Serve as non-bargaining unit liaison with the union and provide necessary reporting.  Participate in bargaining negotiations and LMC committee.
  • Directly supervise the Human Resources Coordinator to administer processes and lead program implementation efforts.
  • Process payroll every two weeks in ADP.  Invoice fiscally sponsored organizations.  Send reports to vendors.
  • Work with Director of Finance and Operations to administer employee benefits and ensure compliance.  Develop program to train staff on their benefits.
  • Other duties, including executive projects and initiatives, as needed and assigned.

 

Staff Culture and Development  

  • Manage staff committee to oversee organization-wide staff engagement and team building events. Plan celebrations, acknowledgements, and rituals to acknowledge big moments.
  • Lead efforts to gather and understand staff input and create actionable steps to further improve organizational culture, create an environment that fosters continual learning, and staff who are engaged and energized by the work they do.
  • Manage facilitation and coaching activities to support individual, team and organizational development needs.  Conduct or procure specific trainings, assessments and/or related workshops.  Oversee planning of annual all-staff retreat and support annual leadership retreats.
  • Direct initiative to develop and foster a culture of accountability in interpersonal relationships, organizational processes, and decision making.  Create internal activities, processes, and resources for staff to deepen capacity for strategic engagement.
  • Provide coaching and development for managers.  Facilitate managers’ meetings.  Mediate conflicts and advise with disciplinary issues.
  • Serve as internal consultant for department directors to increase program effectiveness.

 

Organizational Planning and Alignment  

  • Act as a resource for annual work planning process.
  • Facilitate a culture of evaluation across staff.  Develop system to track lessons learned.
  • Support organization-wide priorities as needed, this could include strategic planning, crisis response or unexpected capacity shortfalls.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of human resources experience or equivalent.
  • Establishing and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, organizational partners, community representatives, and elected officials.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying complex problems and developing solutions, strong sense of personal initiative.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple competing projects and tasks.
  • Excellent personal accountability and follow through
  • Experience with human resources, executive calendars, and/or events, a plus.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Word, Excel and Outlook.

  • Flexibility to periodically work outside normal business hours that include evenings and weekends, and periodically work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.

 

SALARY/BENEFITS/OTHER INFORMATION

  • Salary is commensurate with experience and starts $75,000. Category: Director 2.
  • Full health and dental benefits through HealthPartners. TakeAction Minnesota pays 95% of monthly insurance premiums for the employee and their family.
  • Long Term Disability, AD&D and life insurance provided at no cost to employee.
  • 401(k) and Roth 401(K) Retirement plans with up to 3% employer match.
  • Full time employment defined at thirty-two (32) hours a week.
  • 3 weeks of vacation in the first year, 8 paid holidays, and an office closure the last week of the year.
  • 12 weeks paid parental leave, as well as other health related extended paid leave options.
  • Annual 4% guaranteed pay increase; Monthly reimbursements including cell phone and home internet use.
  • This position is NOT a member of the Minnesota Newspaper and Communications Guild.

 

REPORTS TO & LOCATION

This position reports directly to the Finance and Operations Director.
This position is located in our St. Paul office, but may be required to occasionally travel.  In response to COVID-19, all employees are resourced to work from home or under a hybrid model temporarily.
