Organization Overview:

VOCAL-NY is building a movement of low-income people dedicated to ending the AIDS epidemic, the war on drugs, mass incarceration, and homelessness. We fight for systemic change rooted in justice, compassion, and love. We approach our work with a firm belief in reducing harm and ending stigma, and the knowledge that the issues impacting our communities are driven by institutional oppression, not personal failings. Our campaigns and direct services have saved or improved the lives of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers across the state.

At VOCAL-NY we accomplish our goals through community organizing, leadership development, advocacy, direct services, participatory research and direct action. We are based in New York City, with regional offices in Albany and Rochester, and chapters in Buffalo, Syracuse, and Westchester County.

At our headquarters in Brooklyn, we provide onsite and peer-based syringe exchange, overdose prevention, hepatitis C and HIV education, drug treatment education and other services for people who use drugs. Services are provided in a low-threshold, nonjudgmental and culturally relevant manner.

Position:

The Finance Manager is responsible for supporting VOCAL-NY’s financial systems and contract compliance. This includes, but is not limited to, day-to-day financial operations, monthly and quarterly reporting, policies and procedures, budget development, and annual audits. This position reports to the Managing Director of Strategic Growth, and will also be expected to work collaboratively across the organization to support financial systems and operations. This is an ideal position for an analytical, detail-oriented individual looking to grow their nonprofit financial management skills alongside a fast-growing, impactful organization.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but are not limited to):

  • Receive all incoming vendor invoices, review and submit for approval in bill.com.
  • Serve as main point-of-contact for vendors, respond to follow-up inquiries, and collect and organize w9s.
  • Process occasional sub-granting to other organizations – draft MOU’s, process payment, etc.
  • Manage petty cash and staff reimbursement requests.
  • Monitor organizational credit card usage, collect receipts from staff, and code the monthly statement.
  • Deposit checks and document all cash receivables.
  • Execute contracts with government contractors, submit monthly and quarterly vouchers for payment, and submit budget modifications as necessary.
  • Maintain and retain financial records for compliance, record keeping, and archiving.
  • Annual audit preparation.
  • Assist Senior Leadership & accounting consultants with the preparation of yearly budget. Provide monthly budget updates to accounting consultants – this includes  new grants, staffing changes, etc.
  • Recommend & implement policies and procedures that ensure the fiscal accountability and integrity of the organization, and communicate those policies and procedures to staff.

REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field preferred.
  • 5-7 years of work experience in nonprofit accounting and/or finance.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, and keen attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated to produce high quality work, and improve skills.
  • Clear & effective communication skills – both written and verbal.
  • Ability to respond with ease to rapidly changing priorities and successfully manage multiple projects at once.
  • Must be able to keep sensitive information confidential, have excellent integrity, and impeccable judgment.
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), Google applications and a high degree of comfort with technology required; familiarity with Bill.com and Divvy a plus.
  • Understanding of and commitment to VOCAL-NY’s mission.

COMPENSATION

The salary range is $75,000 – $85,000 per year, and will be commensurate with experience. VOCAL-NY offers a generous benefits package of twenty days of paid vacation, mileage reimbursement, full cell phone coverage, a 100% employer-covered health, dental, and vision insurance plan, and a 403(b) retirement plan.
